Reuniting Europe

Portugal is a small European country as China likes them. Chinese President Hu Jintao offered generous help over the week-end on the occasion of a state visit to Lisbon, in a moment when Germany, France and other eurozone countries are pushing Portugal to seek an EU-IMF assistance programme, following Greece and Ireland.

In the sixties and the seventies, China had a very strong special relationship with Albania, which at that time was an autarky under Enver Hoxha. I remember that Beijing took pride in having set foot in Europe, be it in its least attractive corner in that period.

Times have changed and now China can afford the luxury of setting foot in a real democracy… And in the EU.
